My name is Fran and I'm the new placement student here at Sagittarius Marketing. As part of my Multimedia Technology degree I have chosen to take up a years work experience in a local company to gain insight into my career in the future. I was offered the role of Client-Side Developer within Sagittarius' digital studio team here in the Ashford office. Over my 12 month placement I am hoping to gain real-world experience to compliment my degree. Sagittarius is an exciting new media company and I am very much looking forward to my time here.
My first week has flown by, I can't believe it's one week down! I feel completely immersed in the job already and have learnt so much in such a short amount of time. From day one I've been working on some new projects and some training of my own. It's really exciting to feel like I'm valued as I'm relied on for work and later in the week the work has come on thick and fast.
My first task was to understand the process of how Sagittarius delivers a project from start to finish. I was set the task of working on a brand new site for a local landscape design company. The client wanted an impressive and visual website to compliment a PPC (pay-per-click) campaign. This gave me a focus for the site design as I had to pay special attention to SEO and adjust the site architecture to deliver the best results through Google. Working with the SEO team here at Sagittarius I got some great advice on what to include on the site. By using keyword research we decided on the best architecture. I've been working on the wire-frame and design all week, and the client is ready to go. Next up is the site build and going live, it'll feel great to get a brand new project off the ground.
Alongside this I've been working on some projects for clients such as Race of Champions, updating their YouTube videos and gallery on the site, working on my new Twitter channel and tweaking content for Swale Heating's new site which is going live soon. Being part of a project as large-scale as this has really been an insight into how a company such as Sagittarius pushes forward a complete site design from development, design, to going live.
The biggest struggle I've encountered in my first week is the information overload! Sagittarius has a complete range of organisation tools to take these large scale projects from start to finish, and I'm slowly starting to get used to how the whole process works. I've realised how important it is to utilise skills from across the team, as everyone has different experience and skill sets. I've learnt some exciting new things from various people here at Sagittarius.
With this first week under my belt, I feel more ready to take on the new jobs next week brings!
