The twelfth annual BIMA Digital Day took place on Wednesday 8th November and Sagittarius were delighted to receive an invite to attend The Green School for Girls in Isleworth in what was set to be a thoroughly enjoyable event.

What is BIMA Digital Day?

The only digital initiative of its kind, Digital Day is aimed at 11–16-year-olds and sees digital professionals head to schools across the UK for a day to inspire students and give them insight into a world of digital careers.

According to BIMA, “It’s a day that brings digital to life. And if previous years are anything to go by, it’s a day that changes lives. Not so long ago, 95% of BIMA members told us a lack of skills was holding back their growth. The Centre for Economics and Business Research agreed, saying the shortage of tech and digital talent is costing the UK £21.8bn.”

“Pandemic aside, digital has been growing at twice the rate of the broader economy. But unless we fix the skills shortage, that can’t continue. Digital Day works for schools. It works for students. It works for the sector as a whole in encouraging more young people to discover the potential of a digital career. And with every passing year, it matters more than ever.”

As part of the day, students compete in a sponsored nationwide digital challenge with the chance to be crowned Digital Day champions – winning £500 cash for their school and some amazing prizes for themselves. What’s more, it’s completely free for schools and agencies to take part!

Inspiring the next generation of women in digital

Since we were teamed up with an all-girls school, we brought in an all female crew to demonstrate the broad range of possibilities for women in the tech and digital industry.

Mr Murray played host for the day, and we were paired with a class of year 10s. We started the day by joining our company stand up, dialling in from the classroom so that the pupils could meet the full Sagittarius gang. Following that, we dove into talking about Sagittarius; what we do & what it’s like to work here. We each shared our career journeys in digital and what we enjoy most about our roles.

Now onto the main event… the challenge!

We were set an exciting brief by Vue Cinemas asking how we could use digital to get more young people back into the cinema post-pandemic. The class were split into 4 teams and off they went starting with discovery, then onto design before putting together their final presentation.

The enthusiasm from the girls was infectious and the ideas ranged from brilliant to outright bonkers. They also really impressed us with their design skills using tools like Canva and Google Slides.

At the end of the day, each team presented their idea and our judges, Sangeeta, Natalie and Mr Murphy scored presentations each against a set criteria. The winning team’s presentation will be submitted to the national competition.

Thank you for having us!

We would like to extend heartfelt thanks to BIMA for inviting us to participate, and an even bigger thank you to  The Green School for Girls. We were so welcomed by all of the staff and pupils, and we were even treated to a delicious lunch!

In addition, we took away a few other things ourselves:

  • Creativity knows no bounds, especially evident when surrounded by teenagers enthusiastically sharing some unconventional ideas.
  • Today’s girls exhibit genuine excitement for technology, transcending the outdated gender barriers in our industry. It’s crucial for all of us to address gender bias proactively to be prepared for the next generation.
  • Teachers truly are heroes – by the end of the day, we were all exhausted!
